GET ME BODIED

Christmas is a week away and the office is gloomy, unlike past years. No one has decorated their cubicles or handed out Christmas cards or stocked the kitchen with caramel popcorn or tins of delicious butter cookies. To make matters worse, I got an email this morning stating the annual holiday party is postponed indefinitely, so any hopes of seeing our controller dressed as Santa handing out bottles of vodka and Viagra again has been crushed.

This place used to be fun and I can’t believe I’m going to miss it.

I walk over to the printer, grab a stack of plain white paper, and begin cutting paper snowflakes. Merry Christmas everybody. As I tape them to my cubicle window, I hear shouting in the distance. What the heck?

Brian peeks over my cubicle. “Is that Alex?”

“I think so. Let me ask Imani.” Before I can finish drafting the email, I see her name flashing on my caller ID. I grab the receiver before it can ring. “Hey girl, was that Alex?”

“Girl, yes. He just went off at Susanne,” she says excitedly. “She came to his office complaining about you.”

“What? Imani, you know what? I’ve had enough!” My anger level goes from zero to sixty instantly. “I’m going to punch that bitch in her face.” I slam the phone down, kick off my heels, and replace them with the flip-flops stored under my desk. I leap to my feet, my chair slams against the back wall, and I charge into Susanne’s office. Luckily for her, she isn’t there.

“What did that bitch say about me?” I scream at Alex loudly enough for the entire floor to hear me.

“Come in and shut my door,” he says with a red face. Calmly, he walks towards his office door and pulls the blinds shut. “Cruella comes to my office this morning asking why you haven’t been here lately …”

As I listen to him speak, my left eye begins to twitch. Mentally, I start counting backwards from a hundred. A tap on Alex’s door grabs our attention. When I reach for the handle, Alex stops me to first peek through the blinds, then he gives me the go-ahead to open the door. “Hey, I can clearly hear you through the wall, so I know they can hear you on that side,” whispers Imani.

“I promise you, as sure as I’m standing here today—she’s going to get fucked up. I’m tired of her shit. If she has a problem with me, she needs to bring it to me!”

Alex tries to hush me. “I told her if she has a problem with anyone using their personal time off, she should go to the HR department and speak with them about changing the paid time-off policy.” Alex crosses his arms and leans at the front of his desk. “I mentioned your review and increase.”

“And?”

“She shut it down. Said she believes that Michael’s doing your work,” he says, turning bright red in the face. “She’s crazy.”

“That’s ludicrous.”

“You know when I first
